"For a while, in Victorian England, the ultimate in small hounds was a breed known as the pocket beagle, only ten inches in height. Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert, owned a pack of these, which they carried to the country in a large picnic basket. By the 1880s, the trend in North America had shifted back to 'larger' beagles. In 1888, the first National Beagle Club was established."
